Money Jobs
I've got my planners ready. I got my SMART goals set. Now I'm gonna post some jobs... for my money. Because your money needs to work for you, right? Well, tell each dollar exactly what you want them to do for you.
Assigning Money Jobs
Break down your income target into categories like household expenses, business expenses like ad spend, editing, covers, etc, debt repayment, savings, and self-care. Here are my actual numbers for my monthly budget.
$3,000 Household Expenses
$5,000 Business Expenses (this can be as low as $3k some months and high as $5k others)
$2,000 Debt (Still paying off my Graduate degree and my daughter's Undergrad)
$2000 Savings/Retirement (because I've gotta plan to take care of elder me)
$1,000 Self Care and Entertainment (which mostly gets spent on books!)
So I need to make $13,000 each month to cover everything. It might sound like a lot, but having this clear breakdown keeps me focused and motivated. Each dollar has a job, and I track how well those dollars are performing.
I recently hired a wealth coach and she has me doing an exercise where I'll either write down or say out loud each time I see my money taking care of me. If you're standing next to me in line at a coffee shop, you'll hear me say something like "My business is paying for this drink." Every time I get in my new car, I say "My business bought me this sweet ride." If I take a bubble bath, guess who I'm thanking for the suds! This exercise energetically puffs up my business' chest and makes it want to work harder. I think it's working!
This Money Jobs system works because it brings clarity to your finances, showing you exactly how much you need to earn and where it’s going. By breaking your income into specific categories, it helps you prioritize spending and identify areas that may need adjustments. Most importantly, it provides motivation—seeing how your money is actively funding your life, dreams, and future inspires you to stay focused and hit your income targets with confidence.
