Q2 Week 13 MARKETING: Launching
If you're getting close to the end of the book, you should start thinking about launching. This launch is not just about bringing another book into the world; it’s about capitalizing on the foundation laid by your first book and expanding your reach. Here’s a guide to help you leverage the success of your first installment while effectively marketing your second, ensuring that both your existing fans and new readers are eager to dive in.
1. Build Anticipation with Existing Fans
Your existing readers are your most valuable asset when launching a second book. They’re already invested in your characters and eager to see where the story goes next:
- Tease Content : Share snippets, quotes, or chapters from the new book to whet their appetites. Create a countdown on social media to build excitement as the launch date approaches.
- Exclusive Reveals : Offer your current readers first looks at the cover, a sneak peek at the first chapter, or exclusive insights into the writing process through your newsletter.
- Host a Live Q&A : Set up a live session where you discuss the first book and hint at what’s to come in the second. Use this opportunity to answer questions, share your excitement, and deepen readers' connection to the story.
2. Utilize the Back Matter of Your First Book
The back matter of your first book is prime real estate for promoting your upcoming sequel:
- Direct Link to Preorder : Include a link to preorder the second book directly in the back matter of your first book’s e-book and print versions.
- Appealing Blurb : Craft a compelling blurb for the second book and include it at the end of the first book to hook readers immediately.
3. Engage New Readers
While your existing fanbase is crucial, attracting new readers is equally important:
- Promote as a Standalone Option : Market the second book in such a way that new readers don’t feel they have to read the first book first. Highlight aspects of the story that make it exciting on its own.
- Bundle Deals : Offer promotional pricing on the first book when the second book launches. Consider bundle deals for buying both books as a package.
- Ad Campaigns : Use targeted ads on social media platforms and search engines to reach potential new readers who show interest in similar genres.
4. Leverage Reviews and Testimonials
Use the positive reception of your first book to your advantage:
- Promote Positive Reviews : Share positive reviews and testimonials from your first book across your marketing channels. Seeing praise from other readers can persuade new readers to jump into your series.
- Early Reviews for the Second Book : Send out ARC copies to bloggers, reviewers, and fans who are likely to provide testimonials. Early positive reviews can boost credibility and intrigue.
5. Host an Event or a Virtual Launch Party
Make the book launch an event to remember:
- Organize a Launch Party : Host a physical or virtual launch party. Include readings, discussions, and giveaways. This can be a fun way to celebrate the release and get your book directly into the hands of eager readers.
- Collaborate with Bookstores or Cafes : Partner with local bookstores or cafes for themed events that can attract foot traffic and new readers.
6. Continuous Engagement
Keep the momentum going even after the launch:
- Keep Communicating : Continue to engage with your readers through social media, blog posts, and newsletters. Share insights into your writing process, upcoming events, and any new projects.
- Plan for the Future : Tease the next installment or projects related to the series to keep readers invested long-term.
Launching your second book successfully means thinking strategically about how to use your existing resources and finding ways to bring in new fans. With careful planning, engaging marketing, and continuous engagement, your second book can not only match but exceed the first's success.
Did you know that this post comes from a new nonfiction book I’ve written of weekly craft, marketing and business advice. I’ll be launching it on Kickstarter later this summer. Be sure and FOLLOW THE CAMPAIGN to learn more!
