Surviving Dark Moments
The Dark Moment is the gut punch scene that puts the characters' relationship(s) to the ultimate test, creating a moment of doubt, tension, and conflict. Whether this moment tears the hero and heroine (or group) apart or pulls them closer together, its purpose is clear: to show that love (and found family) isn’t easy, but it’s worth fighting for.
Why the Dark Moment Matters
The Dark Moment forces the hero and heroine to confront their deepest fears, insecurities, or external obstacles. The relationship must face a trial by fire before it can reach the warmth of the happily ever after.
But the Dark Moment doesn’t always have to drive them apart. While many romances use this scene to create a temporary rift, another approach is to have the couple face the challenge together, proving that their love can weather the storm. Both approaches are valid and equally powerful, as long as the relationship is tested.
Types of Dark Moments
1. A Revelation of a Deep Secret or Betrayal
Secrets have a way of surfacing at the worst possible moment. In this type of Dark Moment, a hidden truth or betrayal shakes the foundation of trust between the hero and heroine. This type of Dark Moment forces the characters to decide if they can forgive and rebuild trust or if the secret is too damaging to overcome.
2. A Misunderstanding or Miscommunication
Miscommunication is a classic romance trope that creates friction between the hero and heroine, often because one or both characters jump to conclusions. These moments create emotional tension and a sense of heartbreak, but they also set the stage for a heartfelt resolution.
3. A Life-Changing Event
Sometimes, external events beyond the couple’s control shake up their world, creating doubt about whether they can continue their relationship. This type of Dark Moment challenges the couple to adapt and overcome—or to let go.
4. External Forces Pushing Them Apart
Antagonists, physical obstructions, or mystic forces can serve as external barriers that test the couple’s resilience. External obstacles can be literal (a physical separation) or figurative (societal expectations), but they create tension that the characters must confront.
5. Internal Issues or Insecurities
Sometimes, the greatest obstacles come from within. Internal struggles—such as fear, pride, or insecurity—can lead characters to make choices that endanger their relationship. Internal obstacles often result in the most emotionally resonant Dark Moments, as they reveal the characters’ vulnerabilities and growth.
Crafting Your Dark Moment
To create an impactful Dark Moment, ask yourself these questions:
What’s at stake? The higher the stakes, the more compelling the tension.
What does the character fear most? The Dark Moment should force them to confront that fear.
How will the relationship survive? Whether the couple works together or temporarily falls apart, the Dark Moment should pave the way for emotional resolution.
Surviving the Dark Moment
Ultimately, the Dark Moment is a test of love, trust, and resilience. It’s the scene that leaves readers holding their breath, wondering if the couple can find their way back to each other—or if they’ll rise from the ashes stronger than ever.
In my Page Turner Pacing system, I’ll show you how to structure the Dark Moment so it resonates deeply with readers and sets the stage for a satisfying conclusion. I even made a free roadmap on how to craft these scenes. I’m giving that away for free. You’ll find the link below.
