There’s a rhythm to intimacy in film, television and romance novels. You can’t make your heroine just go from seeing the hero to jumping his bones. Did I just hear an erotic romance author yell, “Hold my beer!” Seriously, guys, there’s a science to sex and attraction, and understanding the 12 Levels of Intimacy—as defined by Desmond Morris in Intimate Behavior—can help build the tension and pacing in your romance novel.
Think of it like filmmaking. A good director doesn’t yank the audience from a long shot (a sweeping view of a character in their environment) to a close-up (an intimate focus on their face with a clear shot of their nose hairs) without a medium shot in between. It’s jarring. The same goes for romance—you can’t skip the steps that make intimacy feel earned.
So, how do you take your characters from strangers to lovers in a way that makes every moment feel deliciously inevitable? Let’s walk through the 12 Levels of Intimacy and see how they shape the slow (or not-so-slow) burn between your romantic leads.
1. Awareness of Presence
Before anything else, your characters must notice each other. Maybe she clocks him from across the bar, noting his broad shoulders and easy confidence. Maybe he catches the scent of her perfume before he even sees her. Attraction often starts with physical awareness—an instant, subconscious checklist of features that match a character’s preferences.
2. Eye to Eye
Eye contact is where the magic happens. That first lingering glance, a flicker of heat, a gaze that lingers just a beat too long—this is where chemistry ignites. Whether it’s a smoldering stare across the ballroom or a stolen glance during a business meeting, this moment sets the stage for everything to come.
3. Verbal Contact
Words are intimacy. Banter, deep conversations, whispered confessions—all of it draws characters closer. Whether it’s enemies-to-lovers snark or a heartfelt late-night talk, this step cements their emotional connection. And in paranormal romance? Telepathic bonds, mate-links, or dream conversations count too!
4. Hand to Hand
Touch begins with the hands. A brush of fingertips. A casual handshake that lingers. A warm palm against a cold hand. Writers often describe an electric current when lovers touch for the first time, and it’s no exaggeration—science shows our hands have the most nerve endings, making even the smallest touch deeply intimate.
5. Arm to Shoulder
A protective arm around the shoulders says, I’ve got you. It’s the classic “yawn and stretch” move in a movie theater. It’s the hero offering his jacket, the heroine leaning in close on a chilly night. This step shifts the dynamic—one character is claiming space in the other’s world.
6. Arm to Waist
This is a partnership gesture—a mutual embrace that pulls them closer. Where the shoulder touch was about protection, the waist touch is about connection. Think of a dance, a slow stroll where they unconsciously move in sync. The stakes are rising.
7. Mouth to Mouth
Ah, the first kiss. But notice—we’re seven steps in before it happens. By this point, the groundwork has been laid. The kiss is earned, built on tension, anticipation, and emotional depth. And yes, it should be unforgettable.
8. Hand to Head
We instinctively guard our faces. Letting someone touch your face, run fingers through your hair, cup your jaw—that’s deep trust. This is why stroking a tear away, tucking hair behind an ear, or resting a forehead against another’s are such powerful romantic moments.
9. Hand to Body
We’re getting into “second base” territory now. Hands skim down arms, rest against backs, trace the curve of a spine. Touch lingers. It’s no longer about polite distance—it’s about knowing and claiming.
10. Mouth to Breast
The heart of intimacy—literally. Whether it’s a kiss against the collarbone or lips against a racing pulse, this step is about deep emotional connection. It’s tenderness, devotion, and reverence.
11. Hand to Genitals
Desire takes full control here, but even this moment carries layers of intimacy—trust, consent, and vulnerability. It’s not just about physical connection; it’s a moment where characters lay themselves bare, physically and emotionally.
12. Genitals to Genitals
This is the final step—whether a slow burn over six books or a one night stand in the first chapter. But notice how much had to come first to make this moment truly meaningful.
Why This Matters in Romance
Skipping steps diminishes tension and makes the connection feel rushed. Readers crave these Heartbeat Moments, the brush of fingers that means everything, the way a glance across the room can set the world on fire. Even in high-heat romance, pacing intimacy correctly ensures the emotional stakes are as high as the physical ones.
If you’re writing romance—whether sweet, steamy, or scorching—consider where your characters are in these twelve levels. Are they skipping too fast -which can be great for when they’re having an argument? Holding back -and backtracking closer to the top to slow things down? Let them feel every step. That’s how you craft intimacy readers will never forget.
